Have you lost some confidence in yourself?

When Kirstie Alley was competing on”Dancing with the stars”…she said “I am so happy to be getting back my confidence. I’ve lost it the past few years, and it’s  time to get it back.”

I believe that everyone could relate to her statement!

Haven’t you lost your confidence professionally or personally recently? Hasn’t someone said something or did something that “chiseled” away at yours?  And you let it eat at you.

Possibly you lost sleep over it, or ate a row of cookies….simply feeling miserable, yet also confused.

Well life is like that. Look at how many young women observe the models on magazines or on TV commercials and worried why they did not look like that.

Many of them do not even know that “photo shop” was being put into good use with those models, and that gal truly did not even look like that. There are so many examples that I can list here… where we are challenged to look thinner, be prettier, drive better cars,….and the list can go on and on and on. This is just part of the issues that I talk about in my book “Who Stole My Confidence?  Rock Solid Steps to Take Yours Back!”

Understand that  it still comes back to the point on reclaiming how we feel about ourselves. And this is a journey. Keeping a healthy self esteem and level of confidence, is a daily process of acceptance. Of recognizing that we do have faults and we can must accept and adapt to them. We have to give ourselves the PERMISSION to grow from what we have.

Acceptance and self respect are the roots of this process. And loving who you are is the critically important first step. Easier said than done…. if you have been teased, chastised or yelled at.  Begin writing down what you truly think are qualities that you like and respect about yourself. And you may have to look deep, because you have suppressed it for so long. Find even one thing, and honor it. Then look for another. It may temporarily be a short list…..but it will grow. Trust me it will.

Just begin this list first…almost like balancing out your check book. You can only take out, what you put in. Thus keep investing in yourself…it will be the best thing you have ever done!

Contact me Eileen Strong, if you want a customized CD created for you to take powerful next steps in your confidence and self esteem. There are many posts to come in the near future, showing you how to reclaim and grow your self confidence. Stick with me, and you CAN and will feel better about yourself!

Mid Term Mania….it’s almost here!

Believe it or not, those mid term tests are almost here. I have a great technique that will help you remember more and feel less angst when taking your tests. Here is the best way to remember more….

Whenever you are studying, always break it into 20 to  25 increments. Then take a 3 to 5 minute break…come back…sit down and study again for another 20 to 25 minutes. You can do this for 3 or 4 hours….if you need that much time to remember the data.

But this technique does work and you can change your patterns. I know, I know you have always studied like a marathoner…..into the night and staggering into class with all your freshly read data…but WHY beat yourself up so much.

Just this small change can improve your scores….and your GPA.

Try it you’ll like it  and the results that you get.

Call me into your college, so I can speak directly to your group to make even more “win-win” changes!

You can find me at ConfidenceInCollege.com

School will go by way toooooo fast. You’ll find out. Why not make it a better experience.  Technically you are there to learn…..remember more, and test easier. Now that is awesome.

Is the 2nd semester already here?

The partying was great, the grades maybe not so great. But now you have to get serious. Have a plan that can have flexibility and still allow fun. But have a plan. If you have not heard it yet, you will hear it again and again thru out the next several years……”Fail to plan….plan to fail!”

And it is the truth.

These college years are going to go by so fast, and you will be getting your diploma and your college payments sooner than expected. Maybe it is graduate school right away. Most companies want you to wait a little before getting it, but I know a lot of students that went directly  into “Grad” school and did just fine.

But May will be here, and your grades will have impact. As will the knowledge you have learned.

If the partying remains consistent at your school (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday Saturday) as it does at many; consider slowing it down….a little. Moderation really does work.

Have fun making new relationships.

Try not to get married right out of college. You may be so very much in love….but let some time past. Travel…..play….save…..and do it again. And then do it again. Take care of yourself first….learn about you, so that when you do share your life….make it a life that is fulfilled, and has an abundance of experiences to share with someone.

Make your summer sizzle with success!

I know the job market is tough, but you are the students who are going to change commerce. So many of you are going to be successful entrepreneurs, because current jobs are tough to find.

Lindsay Phillips created “Switch Flops” for changeable design flip flops, and she is  now a multi millionaire at the age of 25. She saw a market and focused on it.

You too can be creative, think of things that make you excited…that you would spend money on. Simply approach it thru a different angle and see how you can market it.

Hey if somebody made $5,000,000 selling “Pet Rocks” think of what you can sell successfully.

Go to it….and hope to read about your success on YouTube and the Wall Street Journal!

Why does public speaking scare so many people?

I have told this line more than once….that Public Speaking is the #1 fear that people have, and death is the #7 fear. With that in mind it is apparently true (or at least the way that Jerry Seinfeld the comedian says)…”You mean to tell me that at a funeral the guy in the coffin is happier than the guy giving the eulogy?” Think about that…it should at least bring a smile to your face!
But it is the fear of being judged by our “peers” that cripples so many of us. Being judged that we may be doing something wrong or that we may be making a mistake, or that we WILL make a mistake while presenting and simply freeze after that.
Well that scenario just happened on “Dancing with the stars, when Chynna Phillips, completely forgot several of her next steps. She simply blanked out and even though her partner talked her thru all the next steps….it was obvious she was lost. And it cost her the competition. She let her fear overwhelm her and control her.
Well that is what happens when you let a fear dominate your thoughts!
I know you have heard the acronym breakout of F.E.A.R. – False Expectations Appearing Real – All in the power of your mind. You letting the power of something going wrong….believing it and allowing it to explode in front of you.
Staying focused is really simple and concise. Think of a hunting dog with his owner….his job is to “freeze point” to what he see’s and not to lose focus!
This can be you when you present. Stay clear, crisp and focused…and confident on your knowledge of the material that you are speaking on.
Stop wallowing in the fear that you cannot speak in public. Join a Toastmasters group and begin to unravel those fears and take control.
Be the winner in the public eye and the private time when you look in the mirror that night and say to yourself…”I really did great today!”
Give yourself the permission to succeed! It really is an addictive power! And you are worth it!

Laugh, love and live….for tomorrow it may SNOW….AGAIN!

When I left Wisconsin….I left my “snow days” behind. Or so I thought. Living here on the Jersey Shore makes the midwest look like a balmy paradise!
We are on to snowstorm number 5. And it just keeps coming down. Oh and of course the snowblower has died.
That would be too convenient for it to work, when we have had the most snow in years!

But it sure is pretty outside, as long as you don’t drive in it. My rear wheel drive Lexus is a nice ride….but not in snow.

Sometimes life is like that. You have all the right equipment. You are basically prepared….or so you thought. And then “WHAM”…the LETS MAKE A DEAL DOOR OF LIFE…swings wide open and leaves you lying flat on the ground.
That is what has happened in the past 6 days.
My neighbor dies after being sick for 5 weeks. My friends premature baby dies after 2 weeks of living. My very close friend has been given a very poor prognosis with his kidney spinal cancer….and finally today…the Veternarian advised us that our cat has limited time. She said that time would tell within a few days whether “humane euthanasia” might be the next thing to do for our little 10 yr. old Kitty.
No matter where I turn…the unique brevity of life is becoming more apparent.
Truly, celebrate yours everyday. Make it special. Call your friends. Do something special for yourself everyday.
Feel good about what you do at work and at home…seriously. Most of us just glean over our day; deal with “stuff” as it happens.
And we simply go on.
Enjoy your next good belly laugh. Or at least seek out something that is funny, that will make you laugh. Release your serotonin (just a little bit more every day). Serotonin is that “James Brown” chemical that makes you think….”I feel good….dah da dah da dah da dah” (put some music in there)
Don’t just go thru the motions of your day….enjoy the simple things.
Because your’e worth it!

Public Speaking Fears….Why Is It the Worst?

I went to the NJAWBO statewide meeting Thursday, April 1st…introduced myself to many people and remained amazed how many people that I networked with, were confident talking “one to one” but terrified, literally scared of talking to a group.
Why is that?
The fear of making a mistake?
The fear of being judged by someone?
The fear of people talking about you behind their back, after you have finished?
Why?
But the fact remains….the more people that I talked to…they concurred that it truly affected them. The public podium was “not their cup of tea.” They would rather sell to a small group or individually.
In the long run…..this fear can truly affect your ‘bottom line.” Taking control of this “fear” and not letting it affect your confidence is critically important.
Work with a business/presentations coach….LIKE ME….or find one who can train you to a level of confidence…that you no longer keep making excuses.
You have heard it before…..the only fear you have is fear itself….and the acronym for fear is F.alse E.xpectations A.ppearing R.eal.
It is in your mind that is keeping and creating this fear. You can control this emotion. And it IS time to do just that.
Practice…practice….practice. In front of a mirror, and a friend or a pet. They will remain unbiased!

A man that I was networking with yesterday had a speech on being “Green” in the Garden State.
I asked him…”What is your opening sentence?” He said he was going to introduce himself….and then just proceed into his topic.
Within a minute, I told him to change his opening to:
“How many of you have ever seen Sesame Street?
“How many of you know who Kermit the Frog is”
“Well, do you remember Kermits….most famous song…..It’s Not Easy Being Green?”

He thought about this….and his colleague even encouraged him to change his opening….and he agreed!
By asking your audience a question, you engage them. This in turn makes YOU even more comfortable.
Think of the changes you can make the next time you speak. Improvement is easier than you think!
Call me for next steps….your peers will be “green” with envy….when they see the confident speaker you were meant to be!
