Confident to compelling! What a goal to achieve!

To be able to speak with such a manner that people stand when you finish…is “nirvana.” It is the ideal model that most people would have their draw drop open, if that were to happen. Well it has happened. When professional speaker Randy Gage speaks….audiences leap to their feet at the conclusion. He has mesmerized them and has had them take a “call to action” as a result of his content rich information. In fact his video’s usually open with footage of audience, after audience, after audience, literally giving him a standing ovation. Now that is compelling! Yesterday I had the incredible pleasure of meeting and working with Business professional Vicki Sullivan. She has booked speakers, worked with them and now shares her wisdom with multitudes of professionals who are eager to “sit at her feet”…and simply learn. And I intend to do so also. I have taken pride in the fact that speaking is a learned profession that has to be frequently tested, so that your learning curve continues to spiral up. At the National Speakers Association of New Jersey she did a workshop and a presentation on the technique of mastering a focal point. A marketable topic that is enticing enough for people to call or send an email. Her skills are so powerful, that even the veteran speakers felt energized! Know your material…literally be prepared!

When presenting there can be so many variables. Cell phones ringing, people distracting your flow when you present, interruptions, people leaving to make a call. All of these components can affect the quality of your presentation. Being interrupted can upset you from feeling smooth and confident about your material. It happens to the best of us!
When you know your topic, and can pick up at any point in time (and this takes practice) you will always have a sense of credibility. People will realize if you have felt distracted and have lost your flow.
As my late uncle used to say….”Now that I was so rudely interrupted”
He may not be in your audience….but they are out there.
Confidence regarding your message, clarity and credibility will make you shine.
If you were a boy scout you would remember their motto “always be prepared”….well it is the truth. Be prepared and you will be great!

Catch your audiences attention immediately! Intrigue them and beguile them. Make them eager to hear your next sentence!

Remember growing up and how you loved to be told a story? Well, do just that. Tell them a story that invites them to listen to your compelling message. You will have so much more credibility and rapport and they WILL listen to your message.

This is a technique that works. Build your story into your message. Make it one that they will learn from. Your message will be more poignant and beneficial for all who listen.

Loretta Larouche always builds such stories into her presentations….and  you relate to them. Stories of what her grandmother would have really done regarding life’s issues and marriage. Her stories make you laugh, remember your own childhood and your stories that would compel people to listen. This is a technique that works. And it works powerfully. Create a thread  that builds into your story and  have a successful presentation that people will come up to you and say how they related to what you talked about.

Do Your Marketing Materials Have a “Call to Action?”

This is a major mistake that exists on your business cards and your marketing materials!
Yes….you list all of your features of what you can do for a potential client. That’s great….but it does not motivate them to e-mail, text or call you.
You MUST list features after every benefit.
Remember….what’s in it for me?
Yes, people will read your card, but to capture their attention…to get them to contact you, LIST THE BENEFITS of what they will achieve or receive whenever they work with you.
Take a few minutes right now.
Look at your literature. Look at your cards, leave-behinds, one sheets, etc.
What are the reasons that they should contact you?
Yes you know what you have to offer….now make it crystal clear of what they will get!
If you are a entrepreneur, put yourself in your potential customers place. Would YOU call or email after reading what you had to offer.
Remember….Create to Relate to Capture!
Repeat with confidence, and watch your bottom line change!
As a Professor of Marketing at Kean University I make this very clear to my students every class.
They learn that this is how the world reacts to YOUR message.
So….make it memorable, create a call to action and the benefits that they will have working with you… successfully!

Remember….the first sale is to yourself!
Believe in what you have to offer to a client or a company that you want to join. And believe it with rock solid confidence.
So many approach an interview with hidden apprehension. Fearful that they will not be accepted or worse yet…..completely rejected, and no follow up is required.

Keep a passion of what you want to achieve. And sell yourself with this passion everyday. Start in the morning and reinforce it during the day.
Image yourself shaking the hand of your client. Seriously DO THAT NOW!
See the contract being signed.
See that phone ringing and think of how that sentence will sound as they accept your idea…your proposal! The power of your mind continues to be the most important sales tool that you can carry with yourself at any point in time.
Research has proven this again and again.
It is written about in “The Secret” and also in “The Power of Positive Thinking”…and even more so in Napoleon Hills “Think and Grow Rich!”
It is all simply waiting to be untapped by you.
Self your skills and talents to YOURSELF first!
Do this EVERYDAY….seriously. Think of how Vince Lombardi took that average football team in Green Bay and took them to 9 championships and 2 Superbowls…all because of the way
he made them believe in themselves.
Start this week off with a positive visualization each morning… and an even more powerful verbal sentence of focus and gratitude.
Remember….as Alan Weiss always says “The first sale is to yourself!”

The constant journey of keeping and maintaining your confidence.

How many times have you felt confident about yourself for the existing moment….and then someone tells you “NO” about your idea, or a project you were working on, or a date went wrong and they do not want to see you again…..the list can go on and on. Confidence is a sensitive area for all of us. We always seek the welcoming experience of pleasure (in all forms) and want to avoid pain (of all forms.)
This journey of life takes us thru this roller coaster of emotions on a daily basis….doesn’t it?
Think about the simple things. You see an article of clothing and you like it…till you try it on, and can’t believe how lousy you look in it. The spiral continues down from there…as you look at yourself in that 3 way mirror, being your own worst judge. C’mon….you’ve been there. And you have been there more than once.
As a professional speaker, I am very comfortable in front of audiences. It has always been a natural feeling for me….and I love it to this day. Yet every time I watch myself on video….the criticizing takes place with such force.
Each time I make a slight change, a pause, a sentence or even a story. Always wanting to improve…which is good, but boy can this be tough. Especially when you thought you were doing so well!
I have several speaking engagements coming up, and each one becomes a challenge of how I can make it better.
That also happens when I work with people making their presentation better. They want to be able to feel good about their speech, but have already given themselves a “death sentence” of failure. They think that they cannot make it a great presentation, long before they are even in front of their audience!
Always remember the art of practice.  Your speech, or toast, or leading a meeting in the future, practice it  in front of a mirror or your pet. Just feel comfortable enough so that when it IS your time to “shine” you do so with confidence.
Hey you have heard it before….. the “practice makes perfect”…well it does!
Professional athletes practice for hours on end to keep their game at a highly effective level. So can you.
Making a sales presentation is a matter of words and credibility being present with every move and every sentence….but also remember one important component.
LISTEN.
Combine all of those skills and you will be composed, confident and skilled.
Your sales skills will improve.
Your presentation skills will improve.
Your level of confidence in yourself will improve too.

The power of networking…..successfully! Or….how I learned to overcome procrastination.

Sometimes it  seems that networking is waste of time. In fact I have a business card that I pass out and it says   “Is this the best use of my time?”

I pass it out to several people that I meet at events. Then when I  seem them later at a different event, I frequently hear from people that the card with that phrase is STILL taped to the front of their desk or computer.

Seriously,  just think of it. How well do you make use of your time?

I have always loved the wisdom of recognized business speaker Brian Tracy. His book “Eat That Frog“is one of my favorites. The gist of the book is that you should always do the worst thing first in the morning…and I mean the thing that you procrastinate over; you simply DO NOT WANT TO DO. But then it is DONE!  And Tracy then says, if you have two horrible things to do…do the worst thing first. He calls them “frogs.” Big and ugly green frogs that seem to control our life in so many ways.

Procrastination usually comes in the form of that “frog.”  We put off doing what needs to be done until we are pressured into doing it at last minute.

How often have you done that? In fact, might you even fall into that category called the “3 P’s?”

Packrat / Procrastinator / Perfectionist

If one is a procrastinator, they frequently will be a packrat keeping “important” things in their life, that they think they will use another time. Someday, somewhere…somehow. Yet when they do the task that they have put off doing…they do it extremely well. Because they are perfectionist. Wanting to be  in control at all times.

Quite frankly I am married to one. And it sure is taxing.

Some people are only 2 out of the “3 P’s.”

Which one are you? Especially when it comes to networking. This skill is critically important in running your business successfully. Meeting people who should know about your business, but you never get around to mingling with them OR  your target rich audience effectively. You observe other people doing that….but you attempt to and do NOT follow thru. Question yourself and find out what you are afraid of. Rejection, objections or possible acceptance?

Don’t be your own worst enemy. Get out there now…and just do it!

No wonder “Nike” uses that for a logo!

Tom Antion continues to amaze me. He is so knowledgable in the world of internet marketing. His 60 tips in 60 minutes last night was content rich. He even “fessed up” to changing some techniques, that he always considered winners. Marketing tools  such as long copy sales letters, and dropping in video above the letters are now more marketable.

Public Speaking Fears….Why Is It the Worst?

I went to the NJAWBO statewide meeting Thursday, April 1st…introduced myself to many people and remained amazed how many people that I networked with, were confident talking “one to one” but terrified, literally scared of talking to a group.
Why is that?
The fear of making a mistake?
The fear of being judged by someone?
The fear of people talking about you behind their back, after you have finished?
Why?
But the fact remains….the more people that I talked to…they concurred that it truly affected them. The public podium was “not their cup of tea.” They would rather sell to a small group or individually.
In the long run…..this fear can truly affect your ‘bottom line.” Taking control of this “fear” and not letting it affect your confidence is critically important.
Work with a business/presentations coach….LIKE ME….or find one who can train you to a level of confidence…that you no longer keep making excuses.
You have heard it before…..the only fear you have is fear itself….and the acronym for fear is F.alse E.xpectations A.ppearing R.eal.
It is in your mind that is keeping and creating this fear. You can control this emotion. And it IS time to do just that.
Practice…practice….practice. In front of a mirror, and a friend or a pet. They will remain unbiased!

A man that I was networking with yesterday had a speech on being “Green” in the Garden State.
I asked him…”What is your opening sentence?” He said he was going to introduce himself….and then just proceed into his topic.
Within a minute, I told him to change his opening to:
“How many of you have ever seen Sesame Street?
“How many of you know who Kermit the Frog is”
“Well, do you remember Kermits….most famous song…..It’s Not Easy Being Green?”

He thought about this….and his colleague even encouraged him to change his opening….and he agreed!
By asking your audience a question, you engage them. This in turn makes YOU even more comfortable.
Think of the changes you can make the next time you speak. Improvement is easier than you think!
