Speak to be remembered this summer!

Yes, it is the “lazy, hazy days of summer” and we all are looking forward to getting away from the intensity of the year. But you still have to hold a presence in their mind…and you can. You can be “hot” in the midst of the summer heat, without raising the temperature outside…by being memorable with your presentation…and unique.

I have said before that your “brain thinks in pictures” so bring a memorable imprint to the podium with you.

Whether you are bringing a prop up with you…or your message is so strong that it doesn’t even need a prop…make it memorable.
Come out with an incredible opening line statement, and make it powerful. So powerful that people will come up to you later on and say…”That is so cool what you opened up with!”

Mark Twain sayings, can be used frequently for opening or closing sentences. Check out his litany of comments or beliefs and build it into your speech.
If you are giving a presentation with graphs or statistics…why not open with his line of…”There are lies, there are damn lies…and then there are statistics!” Trust me when you say that, it will bring a gentle smile to their face…or it at least will give you a more subtle opening into a dry topic.
No one needs another boring presentation full of statistics, bars and graphs.
C’mon make it easier on your listening audience, by bringing some dry humor into it.
Another memorable Mark Twain sentence is….
“The older I get, the more clearly I remember things, that never happened!”
With that sentence in mind, you can now review information that has to be reviewed…it may be a deluge of data, but at least you can soften it by bringing a lightness to the relevant data, that needs to be presented.
These are just suggestions…but make it easier on your listening audience. Some may even want to be there, but I can guarantee you that the 80%-20% ratio has a portion of people who do not.

So make it memorable, make it credible,…and make it you!

Alphabet blocks spell growth

How to speak confidently in public….and actually feel comfortable doing it!

Ugh….I’ve got to speak…and I really, really don’t want to!! I mean seriously, I don’t want to! First off, it is a natural apprehension. Even a professional speaker can be a little on edge.
If you have ever read interviews of established actors….they always mention how apprensive they are…”how many butterflies” they have in their stomach. And actually that is a good thing. It gives you that edge.
But it is when you let your fear control you, and overwhelm you. It’s when the F.E.A.R. takes place  (F.alse E.pectations A.ppearing R.eal).

Because your mind can allow you to feel and stay …”out of control!”
There is NO reason for that to be a dominating factor.
Your confidence is an ongoing growth process. Each opportunity is a new one. You are on an increased learning curve.  And the more that you have the opportunity to speak in front of ANY size audience, the more natural you will feel. But if you avoid it, and stick to only what you feel comfortable with….than you WILL maintain that same fear.

You have only become comfortable at what you do,…. because of doing it over and over again. It becomes 2nd nature to you. Think of how you perform at a job, or at a sport that you like. You simply just do it!

Like that NIke commercial tag line goes….”Just Do It!”

If you don’t maintain that attitude…the fear will continue to fester and control you. There is a great song sung incredibly well by Patti LaPone…..”I’ve got a new atttiude.”
Maybe that is a song you might crank up prior to giving a speech….or find a song that does it for you…one that motivates and excites YOU! It is the music that gets you moving….maybe one that you use on a treadmill, to “psych” you up and keep you moving. Hearing that music might be all you need to be the catalyst to get you there and present with energy!
Believe it or not, it can be something as simple as that. Think of how many times you have heard a certain piece of music, and you are compelled to “crank it up loud.”

Finally, write down the fear that is controlling you. Are you afraid you will not be welcomed, liked, accepted…. or will you be boring? By writing it down you recognize the issue at hand. This action helps you to actually control your fear. “You got to name it to claim it” is actually quite true.
I have been involved in clinical Hypnosis for over 25 years now, (PowerfulResultsHypnosis) and am amazed to this day, how powerful the mind is! I have seen clients make drastic differences…just thru visualizing how they knew they could and WOULD look.

Finding your niche in any market!

Last night 11/14/10 I stood amidst 2,000 people at the opening keynote for the international pharmaceutical meeting in New Orleans. How would you find a keynote speaker who could engage and entertain such a diverse, yet specifically educated field of research scientists and chemical engineers?
Well they did…..kind of.
The stage was set with plastic covering the floor and sides. 5 large easels were displayed with a multitude of brushes and cans of paint. Who were they bringing out that could engage and “entertain” basically a very intellectual group?
Well out came the “on-site” artist Michael Israel who creates large portraits of famous people, with frenzied and dramatic strokes while loud music blares in the background.
Within minutes he had the crowd mesmerized as he did a colorful portrait of John Lennon. Next he changed the music and he went on to a montage of portraits of the Beatles as a group. This was followed by a creative, montage of colors that evolved into Albert Einstein. AND here was where he fulfilled his niche.
He stated that those in the audience were on the “cutting edge” of creating new compounds; new drugs in different and exciting ways that would help the worlds population. He talked of the attendees discipline and drive to study, create and continue to explore new and different ways to help mankind. Just like Einstein!
This artistic genius of Michael Israel rocked!
And I was impressed. Not only did he entertain, but he informed and recognized the skills of this eclectic audience.
As a professional keynoter myself, I new that he satiated the audience and left them impressed.
And that is the objective of any person who has to make an impression.
You want your impression to be positive, and long lasting.
As I tell my clients and my college students, “the brain thinks in pictures”…and that is what Mr. Israel did, in such a grandiose way!
So find your niche…and make it work. It will probably take several attempts, but find one that works for you.
At nearly 6ft. tall and the last name of Strong, I have focused on the fact that I am the “Attitude Amazon.” With a last name of Strong and having this height, I chose to make it work! And it has. Next I found my niche of speaking on CHANGE. But I broke it into an acronym of C.H.A.N.G.E.=S. And this breaks into Communication, Health, Atttiude, Negativity, Goals, Education and when they are combined, you deal with “change”…successfully!
Remember, change is taking place everywhere, everyday. How you adapt to it is a journey. How Michael Israel found a career changing opportunity in creating portraits; with frenzy and music… was a very, very successful change to his career. He found his niche…now
go find yours!
Helping people present and strategize their business presentations in a credible way, is what Strong Incentives does.
Interested? Well, discover how to present a new or old subject that will have people applauding the way they did for Michael Israel last night.
You’re worth it….as he found out…so was he…in the most unusual environment possible!
Not only did he entertain, but he took it to a next level by auctioning off the paintings that night to help the Gulf Fishermen, crippled fiscally by the BP Oil spill.
“Hats off” to you Mr. Israel!

The surprise of success…..

Making a presentation is easy….for me. Making a presentation with confidence, is frustrating and futile for many. The message you want to get across, comes thru in your mind, but not from your mouth. Nerves take over. People are watching you and waiting to hear what you are saying next.
Then fear becomes the inevitable…and you lose the flow of your presentation. Trust me at this point you ARE being your own worst enemy. Your audience, usually is compassionate and will allow a stumble or two. But after that, you have to take control of the situation and realize that it is up to YOU to feel confident and continue to make a presentation of material that is worth listening to.
And the fact remains that this takes practice and confidence and focused concentration of what your objective is.
As an Adjunct Professor of Marketing at Kean, I know what I am speaking about at class that day, but you must be able to flow with the environment. And this takes experience.
Fear can overwhelm many people and they then take a step backwards, and they tend to lose their “mojo” while presenting their topic.
The acronym for fear is F.alse E.xpectations A.ppearing R.eal. But maybe it is not false…maybe you did make a mistake. Simply own up to it, state that you are nervous and take two deep breaths.
I am sure you have heard the sentence “If it is to be, it is up to me.”
Well that is the truth.
Snap out of the fear mode. Become of aware of your skills, take those two deep breaths, anchor your fingers onto something solid….and continue.
Simply keep going. Do not wallow in a communication failure.
Remember that movie “Cool Hand Luke”…where the famous sentence was said…”What we have here is a failure to communicate!”
Well, don’t let a failure become a reality.
Take focus, use your knowledge and knock
your audience out with a surprising good presentation.
Hey “Rocky” did it more than once….and so can you!
You will be surprised by your success!
If you have speaking fears that need to be addressed, contact Strong Incentives, and we will work with you directly to create a presentation that is a “knockout.”
Why not be a winner, who will relish the success of a great presentation, and realize that fear is something that is no longer a part of your speaking repertoire.

Know your material…literally be prepared!

When presenting there can be so many variables. Cell phones ringing, people distracting your flow when you present, interruptions, people leaving to make a call. All of these components can affect the quality of your presentation. Being interrupted can upset you from feeling smooth and confident about your material. It happens to the best of us!
When you know your topic, and can pick up at any point in time (and this takes practice) you will always have a sense of credibility. People will realize if you have felt distracted and have lost your flow.
As my late uncle used to say….”Now that I was so rudely interrupted”
He may not be in your audience….but they are out there.
Confidence regarding your message, clarity and credibility will make you shine.
If you were a boy scout you would remember their motto “always be prepared”….well it is the truth. Be prepared and you will be great!

Presentation Secrets

Tell me a story!

The Ta - Da cape of Loretta LaRouche

Catch your audiences attention immediately! Intrigue them and beguile them. Make them eager to hear your next sentence!

Remember growing up and how you loved to be told a story? Well, do just that. Tell them a story that invites them to listen to your compelling message. You will have so much more credibility and rapport and they WILL listen to your message.

This is a technique that works. Build your story into your message. Make it one that they will learn from. Your message will be more poignant and beneficial for all who listen.

Loretta Larouche always builds such stories into her presentations….and  you relate to them. Stories of what her grandmother would have really done regarding life’s issues and marriage. Her stories make you laugh, remember your own childhood and your stories that would compel people to listen. This is a technique that works. And it works powerfully. Create a thread  that builds into your story and  have a successful presentation that people will come up to you and say how they related to what you talked about.

Try it…you’ll like it! (remember that Life cereal commercial?)

Let me create a presentation story for you. It is my strength at Strong Incentives.
